Evening at Hanafusa Okiya in Kyoto Kagai-sim (Second Life)

A quiet hush settles over Hanafusa Okiya, the traditional boarding house for maiko and geiko in the beautifully recreated Kyoto Kagai Sim in Second Life. The lights glow softly, but the house is still — its residents are away for the evening, performing at tea houses and events throughout the hanamachi.

Above the entrance doors, a row of wooden nameplates marks the names of those who belong to the okiya. Each plate carries the professional name of a maiko or geiko — a quiet sign of their presence and connection to the house. Among them, one catches the eye: a pale, newly placed nameplate bearing the name Kikuno, a recently debuted maiko whose journey in the world of traditional arts has just begun.

Though silent now, the okiya feels full — holding memories, stories, and the gentle anticipation of its residents returning home once more.

If you’re passionate about Japanese culture and Kyoto’s timeless traditions, and want to explore what it means to be a maiko in Second Life, Kyoto Kagai warmly invites respectful visitors and curious newcomers to discover this vibrant world. Your adventure could begin here
