What first come to mind when we think of Autumn? Of course, the beautiful red, orange and yellow colors of the leaves. In Japan, momijigari or autumn leaves viewing(we can also say hunting) takes place from around middle October to the beginning of December. In Kyoto, the leaves turn red and yellow around November so no wonder that the seasonal kanzashi worn by Kyoto maiko during this month would reflect the "autumning" nature.
 Some would wear yellow momiji with tiny red, some would enjoy wearing yellow leaves with green edges - no matter what are your tastes, for November Kisetsu shop offer 6! different styles of Momiji Kanzashi for those who would like to reflect the beautiful Japanese autumn. It consists of 3 pieces - Hana Kanzashi (the 3 momiji leaves at the front), small kanzashi and flower bridge. You can wear it with kimono or as a simple hair decoration - it will not loose its Autumn charm!

For those who are visiting my blog for the first time, Mizuekai (みずゑ會)  is the event at which the Miyagawacho geiko and maiko display the traditional performance techniques of the Wakayagi style of Kyomai dance, to the study of which their daily lives are devoted. Traditionally, the Mizuekai was the testing ground of the skills of apprentice dancers, and in comparison with the Kyo Odori dance event held in spring, it has a strong feeling of a recital at which the participants present the fruits of their committed training. As a result, it attracts large numbers of true aficionados of traditional dance, allowing visitors to appreciate performances of an even higher
standard.

October Kitsuke

Busy, busy October...This year October seems to has transformed members of Hanafusa okiya into busy postal pigeons. Preparations for erikae of Maiko Kikutsuru, weekly ozashiki as well as lessons, classes and rehearsals before the Mizuekai leave little time for laziness.

Okaasan Geiko Kikuyu

Proud okaasan Kikuyu during this special month has decided to wear solid purple semiformal kimono with autumn water scenery - the pattern is located under the waist line and features water stream, maple leafs and golden bell-flower design. It is tied with light silver obi, that was woven dance fans. Obiage and obijime are of red color and go well with the flowers on the juban.
This month is significant for okaasan, as this month her daughter and heiress Maiko Kikutsuru will debut as geiko. Years of hard work, thousand hours of classes and rehearsals, and hundred thousands of L$ have been spent to make a beautiful Krayukai flower, known as Kikutsuru of Hanafusa, to bloom in its fullest. Now Hanafusa okiya has 2 active Geiko, 3 active maiko and several shikomi making Hanafusa okiya of the most active okiya in Second Life. And this is all thanks to okaasan Kikuyu, her passion for Maiko and Geiko culture that she continues to pledge in her daughters and in Secold Life Karyukai.

Maiko/Geiko Kikutsuru

In the middle of the month, Kikutsuru san will finally "turn the collar" and become the first Hanafusa maiko to have erikae! Otano moshimasu Kikutsuru san!

The time has come for Kikutsuru san to wear her lavishing, created specially for this event Kuromontsuki as she is near the finish of her maiko career. Her black formal kimono features ocean waves that clash into the mountain islands. Upon the waves we can see seagulls and on the islands we can see several matsu (pine) trees. the golden obi sash catches the eye - made from the highest quality silk, it must have cost a fortune. It features pine motif, which is quite symbolical as in Japan pine is a symbol of longevity, steadfastness and wisdom in age.
Her eri collar is special too - it is purely red, with small gold and silver dots. This type of collar is worn by maiko only during time before the erikae.
This outfit shall be worn up to the 11th of October. On that day a special ceremony known as Dampatsu no Shiki will take place and after it Kikutsuru san shall never wear young maiko outfits again.
After the official day of Erikae, Kikutsuru san will wear full regalia for several days more and after she will switch to her semiformal october outfit. Now let's look closely at 2nd photo on the left. Solid beige kimono with eye-catching golden hem as well as pine design, tied with sister obi of the one worn by Geiko Kikuyu -isn't this the perfect look for a fresh geiko?!
In her hands she is holding kago, that is made in shibori style.
Her make up has changed as well - now she wears extremely little of pink and red shade, her eyebrows feature only tiny bit of red, same is with tint of pink in the corner of her eyes. All of these changes signifies her maturity.
No more high okobo - only senryou geta and zouri shall now be worn by Kikutsuru san.

Maiko Kikumaru

After Kikutsuru san becomes Geiko, Kikumaru san will be the most Senior Maiko in Hanafusa okiya.

During October events you are certain to see Maiko Kikumaru wearing light purple solid hikizuri with colorful chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemum or Kiku (in Japan) is the flower of October as well as is the part of names of all Hanafusa okiya members so no wonder that a lot of this flower design would would be seen on outfits of Maiko. Also this flower is considered auspicious as these flowers bloom when no other flowers do.
It is tied with orange obi that has small snowdrifts, kind of giving us a hint that winter is soon to come.
In her hands she is holding a kago handbag that is has extremely autumn design - it has ginko pattern that is one of the autumn symbols.
Her head is crowned with seasonal triple Kiku hanakanzashi and white and purple kushi comb.
At the back you can notice the change - the Tama hairpin is now featuring Coral ball, not summery Jade.

Maiko Kikune

Now lets have a look at October semiformal kitsuke of Maiko Kikune. Her hanakanzashi feature 3 bright yellow chrysanthemums in the front and a flowerbridge with 5 same yellow chrysanthemums at the back. She also has smaller pins like seasonal maezashi and bira bira pin at the front, while hirauchi and coral tama at the back.
The hikizuri she is wearing is of plain green color with wave and wheel motif. This piece is considered rather multi seasonal yet it is best to wear during autumn - early spring.
Her obi sash is extremely bright colored and fits well her light kimono.
Her collar has less and less red left to cover with white thread, which means that soon she will switch her collar to the one worn by a senior maiko.

Maiko Kikushino

In October you can spot Kikushino chan wearing lavishing hikizuri made in shibori style. Shibori, or tie-dyeing, is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, that involves binding, stitching, folding or clamping of the cloth prior to immersion in the dye, the color thus not penetrating the protected areas. It takes many weeks to create one piece thus the price can get as high as several hundred thousand yen. It is held with bright orange obi, that is embroidered with golden thread and  can be worn whole year around.
The juban Kikushino san is wearing has pine needle pattern.
On her feet she has high okobo with red stripes, which symbolize her junior status.
Tabi, work by maiko, are always white! In case they get dirty or get wet, no need to worry - maiko and geiko always have spare pair or several of those in their kago baskets.

Saturday Erikae celebrations in Hanahusa ochaya

Autumn! Finally Autumn! No more t-shirts and yukata, but sweaters and komons with waterproof haori. Yet no matter the weather, Maiko of Hanafusa okiya continue to bring weekly high-class entertainment for guests from all around the sl.
Yesterday was no different.
As the guests entered Hanahusa ochaya, they noticed that the hall was covered with dozens of congratulation posters, dedicated to erikae of Maiko Kikutsuru. Posters were presented by patrons, friends, sisters, shop owners and creators from SL, who wished Kikutsuru san best of luck and promised to continue supporting her in her geiko future.
After entering the ozahsiki room, guests were warmly received by 3 other maiko from Hanafusa okiya (Kikumaru, Kikune and Kikushino). The room itself was decorated in distinct style, giving guests a feeling that the autumn has finally arrived. Even the food itself had a perfect sense of autumn - from the pumpkin soup to the small colorful pumpkin wagashi.
As the evening progressed, the paper lanterns were lit and Maiko Kikutsuru performed a very special dance, called "Kurokami". This event was the last time we see Kikutsuru san as Maiko, next time she will be performing as full-fledged geiko.

September Kitsuke

This month is very special for Hanafusa okiya, for Kyoto Kagai and for Second life Karyukai in total. In past years we have seen many young women debut as maiko but there has been no erikae for almost 6 years in Second Life! That is why, the erikae of Maiko Kikutsuru, heiress of Hanafusa okiya, is causing so much attention. She has debuted way back in November 2012 and now the time has come for her to "turn the collar". In the beginning of the month she has been spotted wearing Sakou, which makes September her last month as maiko...

Geiko Kikuyu

Okaasan Kikuyu has chosen solid purple trailing kimono for this month. Purple, especially dark one, is considered noble color and fits Kikuyu san incredibly. The obi is woven, with leafs and plants on the orange background. This month is full of celebrations at Kyoto Kagai and no wonder okaasan has decided on the outfit that would show the wealth and prosperity of the okiya.
The whole ensemble reminds us that autumn is not far away and it is time to prepare.
Her wig is decorated with red wooden comb, exquisite maezashi pit that features the crest of hanafusa okiya, and a jade Tama pin at the back of her hair.
Last but not least, on her feet she is wearing wooden senryou geta. and in her hands she is wearing pink kago basket, with her name embroidered on it.

Maiko Kikutsuru

On September 1st Kikutsuru san has stepped into her last month as a maiko. For this special period, also known as Sakkou period (last hairstyle worn by maiko during this period is known as Sakkou) Maiko wear formal kuromontsuki, often ordered specifically for this event, have their hair done in a special Sakkou hairstyle and than decorated with valuable bekkou kanzashi. We welcome our patrons and guests from all around the SL to admire the beauty of our treasured Maiko Kikutsuru during the monthly events and possibly even during casual visits to our sim!

For this once in a lifetime occasion Kikutsuru san has ordered almost a whole new wardrobe and accessorizes to match. The Kuromontsuki she is wearing now was custom made and there is no  hikizuri piece like that in whole SL. It features the waves at sea, seagulls, cranes, cliffs with pine trees design on high-class silk.
The obi is also part of the custom made items and features Tsuru (cranes). Not only this cranes a re considered a good luck motif but also Kikutsuru san's name means "Chrysanthemum crane".
The type of collar, worn by Kikutsuru san, is unique and is only worn during sakkou period - it has gold embroidery on solid red background.
Now her hair is something to marvel as well. Worn only for a short period, Sakkou has become hairstyle most of the maiko dream to wear one day. It definitely catches the eye - the hair is piled up and twisted into loops, with one "tail" of hair hanging over the back, cut at the end. Before it was adopted by the Karyukai, this hairstyle was worn by married women of the merchant class in the late Edo era. Back in those days, the cutting of a lock of hair would have been performed by the husband, an a sign of the woman’s devotion to her husband and his family.
The cutting of the hair is still performed, but now by the Okaasan of the okiya and this ceremony is known as Danpatsu no Shiki and takes place right before the day of Erikae.
The hair is decorated with custom made Bekkou kanzashi, that features fan motifs, chrysanthemum and pine. There is also an usagi(rabbit) maezashi made from mother of pearl. Exquisite!

Maiko Kikumaru

September kitsuke of Maiko Kikumaru consists of deep red/burgundy hikizuri with white waves design, hakata obi with tucked in obiage and obijime that is holding precious pocchiri. The eri (collar is is white from the embroidery on it yet at the back there still is a red part).
Also she has her hair decorated with seasonal kikyou (bellflower) kanzashi. The hanakanzashi features one big flower, rather than several smaller because Kikumaru san has been senior for quite long time (she had her mizuage 2.5 years ago; younger senior maiko tend to wear tripple hanakanzashi for first half or year as seniors).
In her hands she holds a kago basket, with its cloth made in a shibori style.
After the erikae of Maiko Kikutsuru, Kikumaru san will be the oldest senior maiko left in the okiya. This November it will be 5 years since she officially entered the profession. Who knows maybe next year there will be another celebration in the Hanafusa okiya?...

Maiko Kikune

In Miyagawacho, junior Maiko who are soon to become senior are allowed to wear more mature senior outfits, kanzashi and accessorize. The senior hikizuri and kanzashi worn by Maiko Kikune as well as her junior red collar and the obiage, that ties the top of the obi, basically shows us that Kikune san is in her "transaction period" from junior to senior.

In September Maiko Kikune will be wearing solid pink hikizuri with summer flowers hand-painted on it. The pattern is located under the waist and is not seen on the chest side, signalizing us that this piece is a hikizuri for a senior maiko. It is tied with long darari obi with wave and wheel design. The obijime is tied in a way that it covers the top of the obi. Her eri collar is embroidered with white and silver yet  the cold
background is still seen.
Her hair is decorated with senior hanakanzashi, yet she doesn't wear comb as seniors do, but a flower-bridge worn by the junior's.
On her feet she is wearing tall wooden okobo, made from paulownia wood. The straps are red and show us that Kikune chan is still a junior maiko. When she becomes senior she will firstly change to pink and after some time she will be able to choose other colors (accept red).

Maiko Kikushino

Maiko Kikushino is wearing light purple hikizuri, with multi seasonal pattern (it features silk strings, flowers and blossoms from different seasons etc). Her obi features geometrical motif and holds the kimono close.
It has been less than 4 months ago since Kikushino san had her misedashi, meaning she will be wearing hanakanzashi with dangling part and painting her lower lip for a at least 6 more months. But ut is not bad, as Kikushino san looks extremely cute as junior maiko!
In her hands she is carrying a kago bag, with her name specially embroidered on it. This is a unique item, given on the day of Misedashi by the proprietress of hanafusa okiya - okaasan Kikuyu.
Though she is still a young member of the Hanafusa okiya, she is already loved by Kyoto Kagai patrons for her cute looks, wit and sense of humor.

Yukatakai 2018

Last week Miyagawacho Kaburenjo held odori, know as Yukatakai. For those who do not know, this is annual event, in which maiko and geiko of Kyoto kagai sim participate in. During it, guests and patrons could admire talents as well as notice changes in the kagai. This year was special for maiko Kikushino, as it was her first Yukatakai odori since she has debuted as maiko and last for Maiko Kikutsru, who is to become geiko very very soon.
For those who couldn't come but extremely wished to, here is a small description of the acts.

Act 1: "Hayashi"

Okaasan Kikuyu welcomed patrons and guests to annual yukatakai odori with a speech. During this act all members of Hanafusa okiya showed their skills by playing music instruments that are unique to Kagai: Maiko Kikune played drum called Otozumi, Kikutsuru san played the shinobue fue, Okaasan Kikuyu played the Kotozumi, Maiko Kikumaru played the shakuhachi and Maiko Kikushino played drum known as shimedaiko.

In the second scene junior maiko (Kikune and Kikushino) perform as Jikata while senior maiko and geiko (Maiko Kikutsuru, Okaasan Kikuyu and maiko Kikumaru) perform as tachikata. During this act self-made summer poetry was presented by the seniors alongside elegant dance, that has been practiced for a long time before the event.

Act 3:

During this act, all maiko and geiko from Hanafusa okiya perform a dance together. In their right hands they are holding special summer uchiwa fan with the mon(crest) of their okiya. The story for this act was written by Maiko Kikune and it was a story of  what love is.

Act 4: "The grateful crane"

In this scene Maiko Kikune and Kikushino performed a dance togather, while Maiko Kikutsuru, Okaasan Kikuyu and Maiko Kikumaru accompanied their performance with a shamisen music. The story that was told during this act was about a couple, who had adopted a baby girl. To their big surprise she was not who they expected her to be...

Act 5:

In this beautiful ending scene each geiko and maiko from Hanafusa okiya performed with a handmade summer Uchiwa fan and a shared a self made poem. 

Yukatakai at Miyagawacho Kaburenjo

On Saturday 25th of August Geiko and Maiko of Hanafusa okiya will perform in the Summer odori - Yukata Kai

Celebrating Tanabata 2018

One of my favorite celebrations with a wonderful story background and traditions. It celebrates the meeting of the deities lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively), after a year separation.
To start with, it can be celebrated on the exact same date yearly (7th of July due to Gregorian calendar) OR on a "floating" date (lunar calendar) which is around August. As you can see, the date can vary from region to region. It also often also depends on the weather, especially in Kyoto where weather can be quite unpredictable.
This year celebrations of Tanabata at Kyoto Kagai sim was held on Saturday 11 am slt and the weather was more than pleasant. Before the event, Maiko from Hanafusa okiya took lessons and in the midday they started preparing and decorating the area - they hung Orizuru (paper cranes, wish for good luck), Kinchaku (kind of paper bag decoration for good luck in business), Fukinagashi and of course Tanzaku (handwritten wishes) on the bamboo, growing along the path towards a small yet cozy hut where the celebrations were to take place. After they have finished preparations, they returned to the okiya, changed to celebratory yukata and, joined by Maiko Kikutsuru who has returned from an engagement, walked towards the arriving guests.
In the cozy atmosphere of the hut, after refreshments and summer dishes were served, Kikutsuru san told romantic yet sad story of two lover deities making some guests shed a tear, yet at the end everyone looked at the sky, smiling and wishing Orihime and Hikoboshi to meet and never ever to go apart...

Obon celebrations at Kyoto Kagai sim

What can be better than an event where you can play games, win different prizes, eat delicious fatty and sweet stall foods, dance an ancient dance and when night comes gather with friends and tell scary stories?! Yes, its August and time for Obon celebrations in Kyoto Kagai sim.
This year celebrations are going to be enormous! Sooo many things to try, so many games to play and soo many stories to hear from members of Hanafusa okiya or maybe you know one as well?

August Kitsuke

This month members of Hanafusa okiya took a photo shot near one of the most popular yet hidden spots at Kyoto Kagai sim. This is a small Tatsumi shrine, which is a replica of a RL shine and street of Kyoto where maiko and geiko can be often spotted. We welcome guests and patrons to discover this hidden gem  alongside many other at our beloved sim :)

Geiko Kikuyu

Semiformal outfit of Okaasan Kikuyu represents summer festivities - fireworks during Obon and Tanabata. Also, this month will have special celebration, important not only to Hanafusa okiya but to whole Karyukai of SL - debut of the new Geiko. No wonder okaasan has decided to wear absolutely new piece for this month. Beautiful pink obi with blue design holds is tied into "drum" knot.
Her hair is a wig, known as katsura, is styled in the taka shimada hairstyle. No hanakanzashi are worn by geiko, but small decorative maezashi, Tama hairpin at the back and kushi(comb) made from wood of more expensive materials.
On her feet she is wearing special kind of geta yet they can change to more comfortable zouri.

Maiko Kikutsuru

In the previous post, it was confirmed that Kikutsuru san has started her pre erikae period, meaning she will soon become geiko. For those who would like to know more, please click >here<

Kikutsuru san is not wearing any common kitsuke, yet very special. The kimono she is wearing is called iromontsuki. It features 5 crests of the okiya and is made of the finest silk. This peace was specially ordered alongside other pieces on the occasion of Kikutsuru sans transaction to geiko - her erikae. The design features water, herons and willow.
Beautiful light beige obi, decorated with golden thread design, holds this rare piece tightly.
During this period, which is usually called pre-sakkou, Yakko Shimada hairstyle is worn. Kanzashi are specially ordered and feature lucky motifs, such as pine worn by Kikutsuru san, spider chrysanthemums etc. Kushi and maezashi, worn during this special time, are usually made from expensive materials, such as mother pearl, tortoise shell, corals.
In other aspects, atatori of Hanafusa okiya, wears same as her younger sister and imouto, Maiko Kikumaru - tall okobo, red juban and kago.

Maiko Kikumaru

This August Maiko Kikumaru will be wearing stripe hikizuri with fan shaped design and summer flower design. Worn by Maiko Kikutsuru in July, this peace can be worn during whole summer. It is tied with long Darari obi, that has golden cloud and geometrical motifs on deep green background. One look on the whole outfit gives a sense of juicy summer fruits and greenery.
Her hairstyle is simple one,worn by any senior maiko - Ofuku. Kanzashi that crown her hairstyle are Susuki or pampas grass, which is August kanzashi that is worn by both senior and junior maiko. The only difference, that is done in Miyagawacho (both SL and RL), is that senior maiko wear simple comb while juniors must wear elaborate flower bridge.
As all other members from her okiya, in her hands she is holding kago bag. Her's is pink with paulownia pattern with a heart lucky char. attached.

Maiko Kikune

This month Kikune san is wearing pure white hikizuri with wisteria blossoms and bamboo fence. Tied with gold and black obi, her outfit definitely catches the eye. Especially, a beautiful purple butterfly pocchiri, that fits beautifully with the purple wisteria flowers on the hikizuri.
Kikune san is possibly soon to become senior - her outfits are getting more and more mature yet not too mature. She still looks as a beautiful young second year maiko.
In her hands she is holding kago bag that was first worn by her on the day of her misedashi - it has her kanji embroidered with silver thread and a lucky charm with her name on it as well.
Wareshinobu is the hairstyle worn by Maiko Kikune, as she is nevertheless junior maiko. Kanzashi are seasonal, and same are worn by all ranks of maiko.

Maiko Kikushino

In August you can spot Maiko Kikushino wearing beautiful deep purple hikizuri that features lake scenery with lotus and ajisai (hydrangea). Her obi is woven, with blue hydrangea and geometrical motifs.
Her collar has more red than Maiko Kikune's as Kikushino san has been less in profession. In some time, eventually Kikushino chan will get to wear eri with more white and less red.
Also her make up has more pink and red to show off the youthfulness of a young maiko.
The hairstyle of maiko Kikushino is same as Kikune san, and is known as wareshinobu. It is decorate with seasonal Susuki kanzashi. August is one of those months when young maiko, who have worked less than a year, do not wear "dangling" kanzashi.
As well as her older sisters, Kikushino san is wearing high okobo shoes.

1st of August is always one of the most busy and important days for Hanafusa okiya members as this is the day of Hassaku. This year is really special for this famous okiya  as it is first Hassaku for Maiko Kikushino (as she has debuted not long ago) and last for Maiko Kikutsuru, who will become Geiko soon.
What is Hassaku and why is it considered that important? Well, it is similar to greeting rounds that take place in winter(Shin Aishatsu) but, of course, there are several differences. Every year on this hot summer day, all okiya members from Miyagawacho Hanamachi dress up in their casual komon or iromuji and go on rounds, paying respects to teachers, establishments and sometimes long time patrons. Indeed, this takes time to make all visits and greet people that play important if not major part in the life of the okiya - kimono makers, local shop keepers, kanzashi makers, fan and prop maker etc.
If you have seen pictures from Hassaku, you might have noticed that some Maiko and Geiko wear most formal kimono called kuromontsuki while others (as do Hanafusa maiko on the picture) - simpler kimono and no make up. So who wears what during Hassaku?
Gion Kobu: Maiko san and Geiko san from Gion Kobu hanamachi wear formal regalia (kuromontsuki with 5 crests of the okiya and formal obi, formal make up with 3 stripes, tortoise shell kanzashi alongside with august pampas hanakanzashi; in case or senior maiko hairstyle is called Yakko Shimada, while junior maiko wear their hair styled in Wareshinobu).
Gion Higashi: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Kamishichiken: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Miyagawacho: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Pontocho: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
This is one of the best times to see the members of Kagai, as they flow through streets in small groups. This is also a good time for you to notice the changes that have occurred: who has become senior, who is now tying her obiage, who has returned to kagai etc.

Amazing news! Rumors have been true!

Yes, the rumors have been true and we finally can confirm that atatori of Hanafusa okiya Maiko Kikutsuru will soon become Geiko. She has officially started styling her hair in yakko shimada on Saturday 27th of July 2018. This initiates her Pre sakkou stage and it is expected that within the start of this Fall, whole Kyoto Kagai sim and Hanafusa okiya and will celebrate their first Erikae since that of the okaasan Kikuyu. This will also be first erikae in about 3 years in SL.
Her outfit and kanzashi are all custom made for this special occasion and are quite expensive yet this shows the how prosperous her okiya is.
