Hassaku 2020

1st of August is always one of the most busy and important days in August for Hanafusa okiya members as this is the day of Hassaku. What is Hassaku and why is it considered that important? Well, it is similar to greeting rounds that take place in winter (Shin Aishatsu) but, of course, there are several differences. So, every year on this hot summer day, all okiya members from Miyagawacho Hanamachi dress up in their casual komon or iromuji and go on rounds, paying respects to teachers, establishments and sometimes long time patrons. Indeed, it takes time to make all visits and greet people that play important if not major part in the life of the okiya - kimono makers, local shop keepers, kanzashi makers, tea house owners, teachers, fan and prop makers etc. This is same, both for Rl and SL, as Hanafusa okiya tries to keep all the traditions, being as realistic as possible.
If you have seen pictures from Hassaku, you might have noticed that some Maiko and Geiko wear most formal kimono called kuromontsuki while others (as do Hanafusa maiko on the picture) - simpler kimono and no make up. So who wears what during Hassaku?
Gion Kobu: Maiko san and Geiko san from Gion Kobu hanamachi wear formal regalia (kuromontsuki with 5 crests of the okiya and formal obi, formal make up with 3 stripes, tortoise shell kanzashi alongside with august pampas hanakanzashi; in case or senior maiko hairstyle is called Yakko Shimada, while junior maiko wear their hair styled in Wareshinobu).
Gion Higashi: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Kamishichiken: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Miyagawacho: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
Pontocho: casual komon or iromuji, no make up, hairstyle: Wareshinobu or Ofuku
This is one of the best times to see the members of Kagai, as they flow through streets in small groups. Also, this is a good time for you to notice the changes that have occurred since springtime odori's: who has become senior, new members or who has returned to kagai etc. This year has showed us that Hanafusa okiya of SL has been doing quite well - there are 2 active Geiko and 2 active Maiko. Looks like there will be some some good changes this year as well, but those are still rumors :)

Shigyoshiki in Kyoto Kaburenjo (2020)

Last week Kyoto Kagai sim hosted Shigyoshiki - annual traditional opening ceremony, that marks the start of another business year in the Karyukai. Geiko and Maiko of Hanafusa okiya gathered at Miyagawacho Kaburenjo theater, wearing most formal black kimono called Kuromontsuki and renewed their vows for the new year. This is one of the few occasions when patrons and guests can see all of Kagai members gathered together wearing full regalia.

Okaasan Kikuyu welcoming Guests, Patrons and Kagai Memebrs during Shigyoshiki 2020
At the beginning Okaasan Kikuyu welcomed guests as well as kagai members with an inspiring speech. After she welcomed maiko and geiko to enter the stage and present the vows. They entered in strict ranking: first geiko, than senior maiko, than junior maiko.

After the vows were pledged, maiko and geiko offered sake and, specially prepared for this event, osechi (traditional Japanese New Year foods).

A new year, a new beginning, an empty sheet of paper where you can write anything you wish for. We hope that 2020 will bring You, Your family and friends many delightful days, filled with joy and happiness. With gratitude in our hearts, we sincerely thank you for your support and humbly hope that You will continue to support us in the future "Yoroshiku otaomoshimasu"

Christmas preparations in Hanafusa okiya

There is something special and sacred about these evening family gatherings...
Outside it's snowing, cold winter wind makes you want to stay in bed all the time...
And you go into the living room where your sisters have already gathered...
There is something about the warmth you share with them, on those cold winter days,
Sugary cookies and sweet cacao drinks, the scent of mandarin oranges and cinnamon....
I wouldn't trade those evenings for the world...
Hanafusa Geiko and Maiko gather inside their okiya to decorate Christmas tree

Hassaku 2019

from left to right: Maiko Kikune(purple), Geiko Kikutsuru(blue),
Geiko Kikumaru(beige) and Maiko Kikushino(pink)
1st of August is always one of the most busy and important days in August for Hanafusa okiya members as this is the day of Hassaku. This year is really special for this famous okiya as it is first Hassaku for two new geiko san: Geiko Kikutsuru(who became geiko last year) and Geiko Kikumaru(who had her erikae last month). Also, for Maiko Kikune it is, in a way, as well first Hassaku since she became Senior maiko in the beginning of 2019 and first for Maiko Kkushino as she stepped into her second year of being a Maiko.
During this event, there was a new member spotted - her name is Amaya and she is a shikomi san in Hanafusa okiya. She was extremely busy helping her seniors to prepare that she excused herself after introducing and run to the okiya. This is great news as we can see how Hanafusa okiya is growing. Who knows, maybe soon we will get to celebrate misedashi?...
But for now, let us return to yesterday's event. So, what is Hassaku and why is it considered that important? Well, it is similar to greeting rounds that take place in winter(Shin Aishatsu) but, of course, there are several differences. Every year on this hot summer day, all okiya members from Miyagawacho Hanamachi dress up in their casual komon or iromuji and go on rounds, paying respects to teachers, establishments and sometimes long time patrons. Let's wish them best!

New Shikomi in Hanafusa okiya - Amaya san!

Shikomi Amaya

Watashi no namae wa Amaya desu
I am Shikomi of Hanafusa okiya
 ╚═══.❀.══════.❀.══════.❀.═══╝

I was born in Kyoto, to the Okami of a small but local ochaya in the Miyagawacho Hanamachi. My mother was never a geiko, just the daughter of the previous okami san my obaasan. I can remember every since I was little seeing geiko and maiko san fluttering in and out of the ochaya.

At 6 years old my mother caught me peeking through a small opening in the fusuma doors watching intently as the geiko played her shamisen and the maiko danced to Gion Kouta. In that moment my mother realized I was interested in this life.

It was no shock to her, when at 15 I graduated from Kyoto Shimogyō Junior High School and told her I wished to be a geiko, one of those elegant women I had admired for so long. In the morning on a humid July day, my mother led me to Hanafusa Okiya where I would be accepted as a shikomi and begin my studies

Maiko Kikumaru is now wearing Sakkou!

Another amazing news coming from Hanafusa okiya - oneesan of Maiko Kikushino, Maiko Kikumaru was spotted wearing formal attire with hair hair styled into Sakkou hairstyle. This means that in about a month Hanafusa okiya will have new Geiko. Just like Kikutsuru san last year, erikae celebrations will take place in summer and we encourage You to come and witness this extremely rare event in the life of the Second Life Karyukai

Now lets have a look at the outfit that Kikumaru san will wear during her sakkou stage:

  • Hair: during this last month as a maiko, a very special Sakkou (also known as saki kogai) hairstyle is worn and that is why this stage if often called "sakkou". Before it was adopted by Karyukai, it was worn by the brides-to-be during the Edo era and it signified a dedication for a future husband. Nowadays, by wearing sakkou geiko-to-be shows her dedication for the profession and willingness to continue as part of the Karyukai. As you can see, from the front it does remind a normal Maiko hairstyle(such as ofuku or wareshinobu) but if you look at the back you will notice how extravagant this hairstyle really is - elegant and smooth lines of hair, decorated with silver wires and red bands. Truly, a masterpiece!
  • Kanzashi: specially ordered custom made daikan kanzashi crowns the hair of Maiko Kikumaru - it features crane flying upon a golden ship, pine and water. all of these elements are considered lucky and are to bring good fortune. 2 bekkou hairpins were gifted to her by her oneesan Maiko Kikutsuru and the comb is Hanafusa okiya's antique.
  • Make up: Formal make up with three lines at the back is worn and you can notice that there is more black and almost none pink, meaning she is now a mature lady
  • Eri(collar): with formal sakkou looks also comes special eri that has red background with beautiful golden embroidery(small golden dots)
  • Kimono and obi: as Sakkou stage is considered a highly formal occasion, Kikumaru san will be wearing most ceremonial, custom made black kuromontsuki that has 5 Hanafusa crests on it. This masterpiece features tsuru(cranes) flying upon the waves. It is tied with white and golden obi that has fan flower motif. Now you can notice that the kimono piece and daikan kanzashi are matching together and it does look like one of the cranes from the kuromontsuki flew towards the ship.
  • Kago: this type of kago, worn by maiko Kikumaru, was gifted to her by okaasan Kikuyu way back in 2013 when Kikumaru san made her debut as Maiko. By wearing this kago during last month as Maiko, Kikumaru san shows her appreciation for Hanafusa okiya

Maiko Kikumaru posing in the park of Kyoto Kagai sim
Kikumaru san said: "From the bottom of my heart I would like to welcome you, your family and friends to take part in the celebrations of Kyoto Kagai sim that will take place this month. By performing Kurokami (my last dance as a Maiko) during this month i would like to thank you for the support and love that you have given me. Ookini san dosu"

Maiko Kikushino passed her first year as Maiko!

Yes, yes and yes!
It has been a year since young Kikushino san, wearing Hanafusa okiya's best formal kimono and hairpieces, stepped out into the flashlight of the photographers. Her misedashi celebrations took place way back in May of 2018 and since then she has studies hard and was promoted to next rank. With it comes more responsibility and, of course, slight change in her looks:

  • Hairstyle and Kanzashi: She will continue to wear wareshinobu hairstyle until she is senior but from now on she will wear shorter versions of kanzashi and not childish shidare ("dangling") ones. The change is visible at the photos: 1st photo shows Kikushino san with her shidare kanzashi, while 2nd photo shows her more mature style of kanzashi that she will wear from now on.
  • Make up: From now on Kikushino san will paint a small upper lip; red and pink are still predominant colors in her make up, but now we can notice that black now appears in her eyebrows and corners of the eyes.
  • Eri(collar): More white embroidery is added to the collar, yet the red background is still quite visible
  • Kimono: colorful kimonos with childish designs(kodama, dolls etc) as well as those that have patterns all over are still worn, bur from now on Kikushino san is allowed to wear black semiformal hikizuri as well as kimono that have design only on one shoulder.
I must admit that her new looks suit her and she looks even more beautiful than before!

Okaasan, oneesan and senior sisters are happy to congratulate Kikushino san on her achievement and wish her to continue hard work on becoming a true flower of the Kryukai!

Maiko Kikumaru is now wearing Yakko Shimada!

Great news! As it was expected Maiko Kikumaru started wearing Yakko Shimada, which means that she is on her way to become Geiko san. During the Kyo Odori she hosted tea ceremony and it was announced by Okaasan Geiko Kikuyu that Kikumaru has passed the exam and will be allowed to have erikae. This is super news as there have been little women who debuted as geiko in the Second Life Karyukai and even less maiko who decided to continue on and become ones. Last year it has been Kikumaru's oneesan, Kikutsuru san, who had her erikae and now the time has come for Kikumaru san as well. It has been almost 6 years since she entered Hanafusa okiya - she was officially accepted as shikomi on April 13th 2013 and debuted as maiko under Kikutsuru san on November 22nd 2013. A long way! Now let's have a look at her kitsuke as it is definitely worth a fortune.
Hairstyle: This stage is often called "yakko shimada" because of the hairstyle worn. As you already know senior maiko wear yakko shimada during formal events but they also wear it during the period before switching to the last hairstyle of a maiko - Sakkou.
Kanzashi: The Daikan or front hanakanzashi should be auspicious, that's why most of the maiko tend to wear pine(worn last year by Kikutsuru san), crane/heron, golden or silver pine needles etc. Basically the motif must be auspicious. Maiko Kikumaru has decided to wear a metal chrysanthemum to show her appreciation for the okiya(the naming like of Hanafusa okiya is Kiku- which means "chrysanthemum"). This flower symbolizes longevity, rejuvenation and regal beauty.
The small maezashi on the left consists of precious stones and again is used for only special occasions. The comb is made of bekkou (tortoiseshell) and is a relic of the Okiya while the hairpin at the back, also made of bekkou, is a gift from her oneesan.
Kimono and Obi: Hikizuri that is worn by Maiko Kikumaru was custom made for her. It has plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, bamboo leafs and narcissus flowers design. There are also some rocks painted as well and it seems that some of flowers have grown out from the rocks.Truly masterpiece! The color of this hikizuri is subtle and gradates from blue/purple to white at the hem and sleeves. You can notice the mon(crest) of Hanafusa okiya on the sleeves and chest.
The obi is light and the pattern on it is created with a golden silk thread which makes it very valuable piece. At the bottom you can spot the crest of the okiya Kikumaru san is from. As the Kimono has crests the Juban(underskirt) should be formal too - the one worn by Kikumaru san has golden waves on it.
Footwear: As all Maiko, Kikumaru san is wearing Okobo as soon she will have to put them aside and switch to more comfortable zouri or geta.
Maiko Kikumaru of Hanafusa okiya posing on the bridge that is located in the Maruyama park of Kyoto Kagai sim
Maiko Kikumaru said: "I am forever grateful for all the support that You, dear friends and patrons, have shown me. The love and solace given to me by the Okasan Kikuyu, Oneesan Kikutsuru, my younger sister Kikune and my imouto Kikushino created the person you see now. I will continue walking on the path i have chosen 6 years ago. Yoroshiku otano moshimasu ".
We welcome everyone to witness the final months of Maiko Kikumaru as Maiko during the ozashiki and public performances that will take place this month. Please feel free to come with friends and family to witness the birth of a newest Geiko of Second life

New shikomi in Hanafusa okiya!

Shikomi Junko
Watashi no namae wa Junko desu
 ───────⊰🌸⊱───────
I am Shikomi on probation at Hanafusa Okiya in Miyagawacho Hanamachi. Geiko Kikuyu is my humble okasan. If you have any concerns or compliments regarding my behavior please direct them to her.

I was born in the countryside to a moderately wealthy family. They named me Junko, which means pure child.

My father was a high-profile businessmen and my mother was a clothing designer. Often we would travel to the city as a family, and occasionally on these trips my father would throw lavish banquet parties to impress his business partners. It was at one of these banquets that I realized my desire to become a geiko. I was captivated by the beauty and grace of these women, and I begged to be allowed to move to an Okiya to learn the ways of the flower and willow world. Much to the shock of my parents.

I left behind my old life to come to Hanafusa Okiya and learn to be a beautiful, graceful woman of art. I dream to one day be a source of pride for my sisters here.

Minaraia of Kikushino chan

Maiko Kikumaru and Minarai Kikushino
On a warm February evening a young minarai made her first steps into the world of Karyukai. These days it is a rare to spot a minarai san in the Kagai not only due to short time period this stage occurs but and busy schedule, but also due to fact that Second Life Maiko and Geiko culture is declining. That's why every time i see a new girl debuting as minarai it makes me rejoice as never before. Seeing a new soul that has chosen the path of apprentice and Kyoto Kagai sim as her home is like a new star appearing in the sky - bright little dot who has a long way before her until she becomes a gorgeous and magnificent sun.
On the Saturday evening a young star has appeared on the sky of the Kagai - Shikomi Kaori of Hanafusa okiya, who's exam took place earlier that week, made her minarai debut in Hanahusa ochaya. Okaasan has decided that new minarai name of Kaori chan will be "Kikushino", which means "your aspiring chrysanthemum" and the future oneesan and mentor will 2nd oldest maiko in Hanafusa okiya Senior Maiko Kikumaru.

"Omedetou san dosu Kikushino chan. Your Okaasan, oneesan and sisters are proud of you"

Geiko Kikushino

.🌸Watashi no namae wa Kikushino desu 🌸.

I am Geiko of Hanafusa okiya in Miyagawacho Hanamachi. Geiko Kikuyu is my humble okasan and Geiko Kikumaru is my oneesan. If you have any concerns or compliments regarding my behavior please direct them to her.

Kaori was born in the outskirts of kyoto her father was curator of a museum and mother worked as a librarian.
As a child Kaori would sing and dance ,like most girls of that age and mother would dress her in kimono and sometimes she was allowed to touch her mothers dolls which were always kept in their protective cases and Kaori would dream of being a dancer dressed in such fine silks and elaborate hair ornaments.
During her schooling years she excelled in arts and music and had been offered a part in the schools dance group performing at festivals all over kyoto.
Finally at school leaving age Kaori announced to the shock of her parents that she wanted to train as a geisha and would not be attending college after finishing high school ,her parents tried to talk her out of it but to no avail so one day she was taken by her mother to meet the okaasan of a prestigious okiya in miyagawachō district of kyoto and it was decided that Kaori would be accepted and begin her arduous training to one day become a geiko...

Okiya News!

Dear guests and readers of my blog,
I am happy to announce that Maiko Kikune of Hanafusa okiya is now ichinimae maiko, meaning that she has stepped into her second year as a Maiko san. She will have different kanzashi from her younger sisters, Kikushino and Kikuyae, yet no ones that her older sisters wear. Also she will have difference in make up from her neechans..Well, let me explain this to you, using pictures of our little summer star ^^
Maiko Kikune in 1st year maiko attire
On this picture you can see Junior Maiko Kikune as a Haninmae or 1st Year Maiko, same as Maiko Kikushino and Kikuyae. Her hairdo is called wareshinobu, decorated with seasonal kanzashi. She is wearing a "dangling" part, that resembles her young stature. Her make up has lots of pink and has only the lower lip painted.
Her duty is mostly to serve food and drinks, welcoming guests at ozashiki; rarely dance as they need to learn all dances by heart. And that does take a lot of time. Right before a maiko changes rank, she can be allowed to wear clothes from the
next rank. Here we see young maiko
Maiko kikune in her 2nd year attire
wearing more senior kimono.
On the second picture you can see Kikune san as she is now, ichinmae maiko or second year maiko. She is still wearing her wareshinobu hairdo and she'll continue wearing it till her mizuage. If you look at the kanzashi, the "dangling" part is missing. Also you can notice that her upper lip is painted. Though, lips are not as big are of Maiko Kikutsuru or Maiko Kikumaru. Also she will have her eri(collar) decorated with more white, which will show that she is maturing. She is now also having more variety in semiformal outfits. Also she will start performing more at ozashikis. With new rank comes new responsibilities, but let us all wish her look as the hardest year is behind. Omedetou san dosu!
