February Kitsuke

Spring is here! The plum trees are blooming and only few little piles of snow are visible around Kyoto Kagai sim. Hanafusa Maiko san and Geiko san gathered at the special tent, located on the ground of Kitano Tenmangu temple to show off their elaborate semiformal kitsuke. Upcoming weekend, this tent will be used for a special springtime tea ceremony known as Baikasai

Standing (from left to right): Maiko Kikushino, Maiko Kikuyae and Shikomi Midori
Sitting (from left to right): Geiko Kikune, Geiko Kikutsuru and Geiko Kikumaru

Geiko Kikutsuru's subtle kimono features ume (plum) blossoms, pine, bamboo leaves, sakura petals. It is tied with elegant vine obi that has a hand-painted kimono and silk on a hanger. Kikutsuru san is wearing a wig, styled in Geiko Shimada style also known as Chuu Taka Shimada. It is decorated with carefully chosen seasonal maezashi pin featuring ume blossom.

Geiko Kikumaru is wearing a beautiful marsala kimono, that has chrysanthemums, water streams, camellia, peony and bamboo leaves. It is a perfect piece for winter-beginning of spring. It is tied with elegant green obi with geometrical motif.

The youngest geiko in Hanafusa okiya, Geiko Kikune has chosen a simple yet refined light kimono with bamboo leaves. The dark grey obi holds the kimono close and leaves the viewer with a though that winter might return so do not hide your winter geta yet. Kikune san's choice of maezashi is same as her oneesan's Kikutsuru and neesan's Kikumaru - a small plum blossom.

Maiko Kikushino's february kitsuke consists of fabulous light blue hikizuri with hand-painted spring blossom motif and a golden obi, different from three of her Geiko sisters'  - it is much longer(over 7 meters!) called darari obi. Please notice a delicate butterfly pocchiri, tied with red obijime - this is the most expensive element worn by Maiko. Her hair is decorated with special seasonal plum blossom kanzashi worn by senior maiko (sr maiko's daikan kanzashi has either 3 medium or 1 big blossom).

Maiko Kikuyae is wearing light pink hikizuri with colorful plum blossoms (hand-painted by talented kimono artist). It is tied with black obi that has maiougi or dance fans and kotsuzumi drum embroidered on it. The obiage is tied upon the obi and the obijime that is holding precious pocchiri. Her hairstyle is called Wareshinobu(and is worn only by Junior Maiko and minarai) and is decorated with eye-catching  seasonal kanzashi that are different from the ones worn by her neesan Maiko Kikushino - the ones worn by Maiko Kikuyae feature small blossoms.

Setsubun Ozashiki 2021 coming this Saturday February 12th!

“Obake” is like Japanese Halloween and its part of Setsubun celebrations. This custom is now confined mainly to the hanamachi (geisha districts), where maiko but most often geiko go from tea house to tea house and perform a skit while dressed in outrageous costumes (not only as historical figures but even as disney princesses!). One of the rules of Obake is that things are topsy-turvey - old dress as young, men dress and women and vice-versa.

Time: 11 am slt

Date: February 12th, 2022

We welcome you to join celebrations at Ichirikitei haya this Saturday :)

January kitsuke

After Shigyoshiki and Hatsuyori celebrations took place in the Karyukai, it is time to get back to semi-formal hikizuri and hairstyles. All antique hairpins, expensive obi and luxurious kuromontsuki  are hidden as okiya's precious belongings till special event occurs. Now let's have a look at the kitsuke worn in January by members of Hanafusa okiya

Geiko Kikutsuru

Geiko Kikutsuru has chosen beautiful kimono of marsala color and shibori bamboo design at the bottom. Bamboo itself is often associated with winter and symbolizes longevity while shibori is a Japanese tie-dying technique: artist uses a variety of techniques in different shapes to make different patterns.

It is tied with elegant green obi with geometrical motif.

Sometimes geiko can wear warm fur shawls during winter, especially on the colder days.

Her juban is pink and features plum blossoms. Geiko also use red juban but mostly for the formal events where they wear kuromontsuki.

She is wearing a wig, styled in Geiko Shimada style also known as Chuu Taka Shimada. It is decorated with carefully chosen seasonal maezashi pin featuring ume (plum) blossom.

Geiko Kikumaru

In January Kikumaru san will wear bright eye-catching shibori kimono with kiku (chrysanthemums), matsu (pine), fans and gumo (clouds). Pine is associated with New Year and winter itself and symbolizes longevity, steadfastness and wisdom in age. The stripe obi holds the kimono close and is tied at the back in a Taiko ("drum") knot.

Her juban is light pink and features plum blossoms.

Both Kikutsuru san, Kikumaru san and Kikune san wear wigs.
This is quite liberating as geiko can sleep on regular pillows as well as wearing western clothes. Maiko can do that too but no when having their hair styled in Ofuku or Wareshinobu.

Both Geiko Kikutsuru, Kikumaru and Kikune are holding kago baskets made from chirimen silk. In these small "bags" Geiko and Maiko have everything they might need during ozashiki - Maioughi (dance fan), spare pair of tabi socks, special comb in case maiko san need to adjust her hair, maiko lipstick, white powder and, of course, meishi (business cards).

Geiko Kikune

For his month, Geiko Kikune has chosen to wear gradient pink kimono with spring motif: ume blossoms, pine, bamboo leaves, sakura petals. It is tied with elegant green obi that has a geometrical motif and is similar to the one worn by her oneesan, Geiko Kikutsuru.

Her juban is pink and features blossom pattern.

The eri(collar) is white, and is symbolizes of pureness, femininity and maturity.

On her feet you can spot standard type of geta, worn by geiko and geisha - senryou geta. However, you can also see geiko san wearing yuki geta, normal geta or zori (Geiko Kikutsuru is wearing special geta that prevent socks from getting wet from the snow). In case of Geiko Kikune and Geiko Kikumaru, they both wore senryou geta for the photoshot.

Maiko Kikushino

In the first month of 2022, Maiko Kikushino san is wearing black hikizuri made in a shibori style.  Kimono, that are created in this style are extremely expensive as it takes months to complete one piece (shibori is a Japanese tie-dying technique, using a variety of techniques in different shapes to make different patterns. Shibori technique dates from the 8th century. Amazing!).

The kimono is tied with a green obi, that has golden geometrical design. The green on the obi goes beautifully with the green of the undergarment as well as green elements in the hanakanzashi.

The Seasonal kanzashi for seniors most often feature pine, bamboo and plums in more subtle, pinkish and beige colors than worn by Juniors.

Maiko Kikuyae

For January Maiko Kikuyae san is wearing black and red hikizuri, made in shibori style (same style as her neesan Kikune). The the golden darari obi goes really nice with the hikizuri!

Her eri is also different from her neesan, Maiko Kikushino - some white elements embroidered on the red background symbolizes that she's still a "baby" and a junior Maiko.

As for the hairstyle, it is called Wareshinobu and is decorated with special seasonal kanzashi - Sho Chiku Bai (pine, bamboo and plum).

Kago is red, with Maiko Kikuyae's name sewn on it. This special kago was given as a present on the day of her Misedashi.

As Junior Maiko, Maiko Kikune is wearing high okobo but with red stripes

Shigyoshiki in Kyoto Kaburenjo (2022)

This month Kyoto Kagai sim hosted Shigyoshiki - annual traditional ceremony, that marks the start of another business year in the Karyukai. Geiko and Maiko of Hanafusa and Komayaka okiya gathered at Miyagawacho Kaburenjo theater, wearing most formal black kimono called Kuromontsuki and renewed their vows for the new year. This is one of the few occasions when patrons and guests can see all of Kagai members gathered together wearing full regalia.

This year's ceremony was quite special - Maiko san and Geiko san were given awards according to their contribution to the Kyoto Kagai.

After the vows were pledged and awards were given, maiko and geiko offered sake and, specially prepared for this event, osechi (traditional Japanese New Year foods).

A new year, a new beginning, an empty sheet of paper where you can write anything you wish for. We hope that 2022 will bring You, Your family and friends many delightful days, filled with joy and happiness. With gratitude in our hearts, we sincerely thank you for your support and humbly hope that You will continue to support us in the future "Yoroshiku otaomoshimasu"

P.S. 2 shikomi san were spotted during the festivities therefore we can expect debuts in Kyoto Kagai in the near future :)

December kitsuke

Dear readers and patrons,

This is last kitsuke post in 2021, next one will be in January 2022. Hanafusa okiya members - Okaasan Kikuyu, Geiko Kikutsuru, Geiko Kikumaru, Geiko Kikune, Maiko Kikushino and Maiko Kikuyae hope that the Christmas Holidays and New Year celebrations will bring happiness and joy into your house, and that soon we will meet again in the new 2022 - year of the water tiger.

Now, let's return to the December kitsuke post :)

Geiko Kikutsuru

Atatori of Hanafusa Okiya Geiko Kikutsuru is wearing delicate pink kimono with flowers on a fan and a river design. Kawa(river) or winding stream represents continuity and the future. It also has a cooling affect on the viewer. Uchiwa with peonies, chrysanthemums, momiji and other plants and flowers is more of combined design, that can be worn from late summer till beginning of winter. It is tied with expensive black obi with that features stripes of fabric.
Her Katsura (wig) is decorated with special maezashi that features a maneki board that was signed by famous kabuki played during Kaomise Soken. Was it Tamasaburo or someone else? Visit Kyoto Kagai during the events and you can talk to Geiko Kikutsuru about Kabuki and discuss your favorite kabuki actors and plays :)

Geiko Kikumaru

In December Kikumaru san will wear delicate grey kimono with waves and boats that carry camellias and chrysanthemums. This kimono is perfect with late autumn and winter.
The white and golden obi holds the kimono close and is tied at the back in a Taiko ("drum") knot.
Her juban is light pink and features leaf and pine needle patterns. Geiko also use red juban but mostly for the formal events where they wear kuromontsuki.
Both Kikutsuru san and Kikumaru san wearing for semiformal events wear wigs styled in Geiko Shimada style also known as Chuu Taka Shimada. This is quite liberating as geiko can sleep on regular pillows as well as wearing western clothes. Maiko can do that too but no when having their hair styled in Ofuku or Wareshinobu. Kikumaru san's maezashi features simple yet refined bamboo maezashi.

Geiko Kikune

Geiko Kikune, who has her erikae only last week, during December events at Kyoto Kagai sim and outside, will wear solid green semiformal kimono with colorful chrysanthemums, plums, fans and also peonies. Gorgeous piece! Chrysanthemum or Kiku (in Japan) is considered an auspicious flower as well as is the part of names of all Hanafusa okiya members so no wonder that a lot of this flower design is going to be seen on the outfits of Kyoto Kagai members. Why auspicious? Well, this flower is considered auspicious as these symbolizing the Japanese Imperial family (Special chrysanthemum is the mon of the imperial family as well as the emperor sits on the Chrysanthemum throne). The obi is golden and hold the kimono close. The juban features red plum blossoms and remind us that soon the winter will be over.
Now Kikune san can enjoy wearing a wig, mature kimono, zouri etc but also there will be more responsibilities and things to handle.

Maiko Kikushino

In December Kikushino san will be wearing fabulous navy blue hikizuri with hand-painted matsu or pine tree and snow cloud motifs.
In December all kimonos that maiko san and geiko san wear are linned so to keep the wearer warm during winter coldness.
Her obi is created with silver and golden threads that make a geometrical and flower pattern on lighter background. End of the obi has okiya mon or emblem(as every family in japan, all okiya and yakata in have their own emblems too) which means she comes from this family - Hanafusa okiya.
Her hairstyle is called Ofuku and decorated with seasonal matsu take kanzashi that have 2 blank boards that are signed by kabuki actors during the Kaomise Soken event (you can read more abut event and these kanzashi in this post).

Maiko Kikuyae

This month you can spot Maiko Kikuyae wearing a very special hikizuri, designed by Kiku no Iki shop. This is multi seasonal shibori hikizuri with flower and origami crane motif on bright green background.
Kimono is tied with black Darari obi that has many different flowers on it, meaning it can be used in spring, summer and autumn months.
Her hairstyle is Wareshinobu (this hairstyle is worn only by Minarai and Junior Maiko) and kanzashi feature a lot of different elements that are considered lucky - small maneki neko cats, arrows in the targets etc. This version of kanzashi is reserved for junior maiko, whilst senior maiko wear more reserved kanzashi that feature bamboo leaves. You can compare kanzashi worn by Maiko Kikuyae and the ones worn by her neesan Maiko Kikushino.

Kaomise Soken at Kyoto Kagai sim

Yesterday Kyoto Kagai sim held Kaomise Soken at Miyagawacho Kaburejo theater. Starting from this year it will be an annual (same as in RL) event, that will take place in the beginning of December.
Kaomise Soken is the main theater event gathering a huge number of famous actors.

Maiko and Geiko go to attend the performance and after they get the name of their favorite actors written on their kanzashi. Now, this is the reason why maiko san, both junior and senior, have these blank makeki boards. After the play, they go behind the stage and have these boards signed by their favorite kabuki actors - black ink is used by the actors who perform male roles and red ink by those who perform as onnagata (female roles). So, before the play maiko san wear blank maneki on the hanakanzashi and after the event they proudly wear the signed ones.

Some geiko have maezashi in a form of a small maneki board therefore they can get an autograph as well :)
